The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends an annual inspection for every chimney, fireplace, and vent system. If you burn wood regularly, you should plan on a sweep every year, or sooner if creosote buildup exceeds 1/8 inch.
How much does a chimney sweep cost?

What are the warning signs my chimney needs repair?
Watch for crumbling mortar joints, white staining (efflorescence), rust on the damper or firebox, smoke entering the room, water in the firebox after rain, or a strong campfire smell when the fireplace is not in use. Any of these signal it's time for a professional inspection.
